Measurement & sizing

School clothes

It is always important to measure your child before you place your order on line, and we suggest you try our measuring chart below, we usually still show imperial measurements, i.e. inches. It is always a good idea to allow for growth – something to grow into is always better than something that fits snuggly.

When deciding how much to buy, try our suggestions which obviously depend on how often you do the washing during the week.; three to five blouses or shirts, one or two sweaters or jumpers, plenty of socks and at least two pairs of trousers or skirts. Remember to order name tapes well in advance (these can often take around 2 weeks to arrive)  to allow time to sew them on before the beginning of term. Easy iron- on labels are also available.

School holidays and especially the summer holidays are a very busy time in the shop therefore we suggest you purchase your uniform as early as you can, to ensure that the items you need are available and especially if you need clothes to be altered or made to order . Busy lives, and  holidays means school uniform is often left until the commencement of the term, so just call 01252 322020, and don’t panic…!! We can provide most solutions even up to the day before school starts. Always ask for advice. Our expert staff will be happy to talk to you about a child's individual needs. We have been doing this for nearly a century…so should have the answers!

How to measure your head:

Place your tape measure around you head just above your ear, across the mid-forehead, completely circling your head. Hold the tape firmly, but not too tightly. Basically you need to measure your head exactly where the hat will sit. We recommend if your measurement falls between sizes, choose the next largest size. To see how your measurement compares to our sizes perhaps check the size of an existing hat in the wardrobe, as they vary depending on the hat maker.

Self measurement tips for the entire body:

If you do want to measure yourself prior to order, we do suggest the following tips for the best results. Firstly stand barefoot and in your underwear and secondly ask someone else to help!  Always attempt to take measurements two or three times to account for variations in your stance.

  • Sleeve Length - Take this measurement from the collar seam on the shoulder line along the shoulder and down the outer sleeve to the cut edge.
  • Chest Size - Put a tape around the fullest /widest part of the chest, and under the arms making sure to be around the height of the shoulder blades.
  • Waist  Size- Find the natural waistline with the tape over any underwear.
  • Leg Length- Place the tape at the top of the inside of the leg at the crotch and measure to the hem line.
  • Neck  measurement- For an accurate collar size, take a tape around the neck at base where with shirt fits naturally.
