Mr RUBICK IS MARRIED

In this photo my Great Grandfather is wearing his Aldershot Volunteer Fireman's uniform. His helmet used to be on display at Aldershot Library, but was moved to Southampton where it is now somewhere! In later life he worked for the Aldershot Light and Water company. See photo in Museum.

Willie Rubick married Suzanna Hawkes from Hawkes Dairy in East Street Farnham in 1895.

They had one daughter, my grandmother, Eunice. She was educated at Cavendish School also in Victoria Road.

Young Frederick Edgar joined the Church Lads Brigade and he can be seen in the photo' outside Holy Trinity Church. See photo in museum. In 1910 he became apprenticed to Mr Walter Sumpster who had a menswear shop at 8 Union Street, where Dunn's used to be.

I also have Frederick's apprenticeship papers.

In 1914 he was in the Hampshire Cycle Battalion part of the Hampshire Carabinier as they had no transport . In 1915 he was in the Carabinier and I am told that they were a calvary unit made up of Yeoman farmers who provided their own horses. My grandfather was one of the first to enlist who didn't need to provide his own horse, when the regulations changed.

see Hampshire Carabiniers board in Museum.

By 1914 Willie Rubick had moved to larger premises in Gordon road on the corner where Charter's garage is. He supplied the wagons which followed the troops and used to allow the French onion sellers to sleep in the stable where he kept his horse and cart.

In the photo Willie is standing with his daughter Eunice and in each photo you can see he is getting fatter. His wife and sister Lotte are looking out of the window.
